Data Products Release Notes
1000 m V5.0 and 100 m V2.0: De Veen
- Release date:
November 2023
- Warning:
Soil Water Content data from different versions are not compatible. Do not combine old and new versions: doing so will introduce offsets and scale changes!
Summary
We have doubled the number of observations at the equator and reduced the maximum gap between observations by a factor of 5. By forward-filling the Ka band from AMSR2 we are able to obtain full coverage and produce L band SWC for the entire SMAP swath.
We have redesigned the system that filters out low quality footprints from the passive microwave observations It is now better at detecting radio frequency interference and cold sky observations, and at removing outlier footprints.
We are better at obtaining the SWC signal at the low end, allowing us to see more spatial and temporal variation. This was achieved by improving the parametrization of the SWC retrieval model.

Version 4.0: Tourmalet
Summary
This version fixes a number of issues with geolocation and antenna retrieved footprint sizes in SMAP and AMSR2. This changes lead to better representation of soil moisture and temperature conditions close to coastal areas. Furthermore a dynamic outlier filter had been added to filter out RFI sources, extreme rain events and any other noise impacting the observed signals. In addition the bias in the Teff has been reduced. As a result the absolute values and the range of (especially C and X band) have changed. This also lead to an easier and much closer comparison between soil moisture retrieved at L, C and X band. AMSRE V4.0 was released in March 2022. New values for the AMSRE/AMSR-2 intercalibration equations are implemented for AMSRE. The values are based on linear regressions between AMSRE L1S slow rotation and AMSR2 L1B brightness temperatures.
- Release date:
March 2022
- Compatibility changes:
Changes absolute values and range in X, C and L band.
- Note:
AMSRE geolocation has not been updated in this release. As such, care must be taken when combining the AMSRE and AMSR2 periods.
Products
As of version 4.0, vegetation corrected products are not produced anymore. Therefore Band names are not followed by N or V anymore and remain as is in the product name. In addition, minor versioning is enabled and changes the version part.
